The first Cornwall Sports Awards, set up to honour the outstanding contributions made by dedicated sports coaches, officials, clubs, volunteers and young leaders from across the county, have been held at the Burrell Theatre at Truro School.

The prestigious event was organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, an organisation which supports all aspects of sport and physical activities in Cornwall and is the main funding stream for funds from Sport England.

Special guests included Jim Clarke, the SW Regional Director of Sport England; who said "This awards evening has recognised the hard work and great achievements of volunteers, clubs and sports people from across Cornwall".

Other guests were Heather Crouch, SW Regional Sports Board and Sports Coach UK Sports Board; Henry Ashworth, Extreme Academy Newquay & South West Regional Sports Board, Julia Goldsworthy, MP Falmouth & Camborne; Jim McKay, Head Coach Cornish Pirates RFC and Ruth Brown , Sports Leader UK

18 awards were presented in five separate categories, including:

Coach (sponsored by Cornwall College); Club (sponsored by St Austell Brewery); Volunteer (sponsored by Miller Countryside); Official (sponsored by the Tregenna Castle Hotel) and Young Leadership (sponsored by School Sports Partnerships from across the county) .

Gift vouchers were provided by Tony Pryce Sports, and a prize draw was provided by Rosemullion Homes.

The awards were presented to the winners by representatives of the sponsors.

  • Male Coach of the Year – Richard Bonehill, Truro Fencing Club
  • Female Coach of the Year – Jean Davies, St Austell Netball Club
  • Young Performers Coach of the Year – Tony Bragg, Penzance Gymnastics Club
  • Young Coach of the Year U25 – Andrew Ayre, St Mawes Football Club
  • Adult Club of the Year – Wendron Cricket Club
  • Junior Club of the Year – Truro Swim ming Club
  • Club of the Year 2006 – Portreath Surf Life Saving Club
  • Lifetime Services to Sport – Jean Clow-Davies, Penzance Hockey Club
  • Community Volunteer of the Year – Terry Tresize, Falmouth Cricket Club
  • Community Volunteer of the Year U25 – Claire Fry, Bude Bay Netball Club
  • Official of the Year – Celia Webster
  • Match Official of the Year – Steve Hobson
  • Young Official of the Year – Ben Homer
  • Junior Sports Leader of the Year – Katie Venton, Penair School
  • Community Sports Leader of the Year – Michael Boucher – Wadebridge School
  • Higher Sports Leader of the Year – Steven Johns, Bude School
  • Young Leader of Year - Lucy Bone, Launceston School
  • Community Volunteer of the Year Step into Sport – Vicky Fisher, Bodmin School
