Sports Awards Winners
And the winners are?
The second Cornwall Sports Awards, set up to honour the outstanding contributions made by dedicated sports coaches, officials, clubs, volunteers and young leaders from across the county, were held at the Burrell Theatre at Truro School on Wednesday 6 June.
18 awards were presented in five separate categories, including :
Coach (sponsored by Cornwall College); Club (sponsored by Tony Pryce Sports); Volunteer (sponsored by Miller Countryside); Official (sponsored by the Tregenna Castle Hotel) and Young Leadership (sponsored by School Sports Partnerships from across the county)

COACH

Male Coach of the Year - Jim Davison, Launceston & North Cornwall Boxing Club
- GB Olympic 2008 squad Development Coach
- Team Coach in World Junior Championships and Masters tournament, Morocco
- Teach Coach for Junior EV Tournament, Italy
- Coach of Launceston and North Cornwall boxing club which he founded 22 years ago

Female Coach of the Year - Denise May, Bude Bay Stars Netball Club
- Head Coach of Bude Bay Stars Netball Club, coaching both the Junior and Senior clubs
- Successful in the club gaining England Netball CAPS Accreditation
- Coach at Bude School, coached U14 and U18 teams into National Sports Colleges finals
- Developed Coaches and Umpires within Junior club, 2 Level 1 coaches both aged 17

Young Performers Coach of the Year - Jon Salfield, Truro Fencing Club
- Assistant Coach to GB Junior squad
- Coached GB U16, U15, U12, U11 and U10 Fencers to No.1 ranking
- Coaches 6 of the 12 GB U12 squad who all come from Truro Fencing club
- Implemented a new youth pathway structure for Truro Fencing club

Young Coach of the Year U25 - James Martin, Cornwall College Table Tennis Club
- Table Tennis Level 3 coach and applied for Level 4
- Coach of Cornwall College Table Tennis squad
- Coach of Forest Green Club for disabled and people with learning difficulties
- Increased number of Cornwall College teams entering West Cornwall league
CLUB

Adult Club of the Year - St Agnes Netball Club
- Increased membership enabled starting a 3rd Senior team this season
- Working towards establishing a Junior club to start June 07
- Commitment to umpire and coach development, 13 trainee umpires at present
- Successful fundraising and sponsorship to develop the club

Junior Club of the Year - ECS Predators Netball Club
- 50 members ranging from 10 ? 16 years old
- 2 x U13 teams and 2 x U15 teams in Cornwall Junior league
- 1 x U16 team in Cornwall Senior league
- Many players become part of the Cornwall Netball County development squads

Club of the Year 2007 - Newquay Ladies Football Club
- 1st Senior team is the first team in Cornwall to compete in the SW Combination league
- Reserve Senior team now achieved promotion to same league
- 7 Junior teams from U8?s through to U16's
- Current club membership of 250 girls and women
VOLUNTEERING

Lifetime Services to Sport ? Paul Manning, Cornwall Schools Athletics Association
- 35 years volunteering for Cornwall Schools Athletics Association
- Current President of the Association
- Coaches Nationally ranked Cross Country athletes
- Co-ordinated 1990 National Schools Cross Country Championships at Wadebridge
- Co-ordinated 1994 British International Schools Cross Country at Trelissick
- Working towards bid for World Schools Cross Country Championships in 2010
- Team Manager for County Schools Cross Country Teams at South West and Nationals

Community Volunteer of the Year ? Chris Goninan, St Just Cricket Club
- Club Secretary of St Just Cricket Club
- Coach of U14 and U15 teams
- Bridged gap between junior and senior club by getting senior players to mentor juniors
- Driving force behind the club

Community Volunteer of the Year U25 ? Andrea Semmonds, Brannel Netball Club
- Established Brannel Netball Club in 2006 and coaches both the Senior and Junior club
- Currently 50 members
- Assistant Coach Cornwall U16 squad
- Committed to raising the profile of Netball in the area

Official of the Year - Malcolm Roberts, Cornwall Cricket Umpires Assoc
- Obtained ?3,000 in sponsorship for umpire development in Cornwall
- Established and developed ?Introduction to umpiring? workshop for Cornwall
- Maintains Cornwall Cricket Umpires Association website
- Recently appointed as a Trainer to train and develop new umpires

Match Official of the Year - Angela Lewis, Cornwall Hockey Umpires Assoc
- Level 3 Hockey Umpire and umpires National League Hockey games
- Tutors Foundation Umpire courses across Cornwall
- Mentors newly qualified Umpires
- Developed Cornwall Hockey Umpires Association by designing a dedicated website

Young Official of the Year - Thomas Quick, West Cornwall Football Centre
- Level 6 Football referee, expecting to become a Level 4 this year
- One of the youngest referees in Cornwall
- Referees for West Cornwall Football Development Centre
- Refereeing in the Combination league from April 07

- Selected by Youth Sports Trust to be a Young Sports Ambassador for 2012 Olympics
The prestigious event was organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, an organisation which supports all aspects of sport and physical activities in Cornwall and is the main funding stream for funds from Sport England. With the joint aim to get more people active in Cornwall.
Special guests included Phil De Glanville, the Ex England Rugby Captain and Head of Delivery Sport England SW; who said "This awards evening has recognised the hard work and great achievements of volunteers, clubs and sports people from across Cornwall".
Other guests were Chris Webb, Director of Football Truro City FC, David Peacock, Rosemullion Homes, Kevin Meyers, Blokarting National Champion (www.blokart.com)
