Eight clubs have been shortlisted for the prestigious Club of the Year award to be presented at the Cornwall Sports Awards presentation night on November 13.

And West Briton readers have the chance to vote for their chosen club, either by text or by post (see details at bottom of page).

Your shortlisted clubs are as follows:

1. CORNWALL COUGARS JUNIOR BASKETBALL CLUB:
The club represented Cornwall in the England Schools Basketball competition competing against South West Counties, they successfully won through to the national finals.
 They were runners-up in the recent National League U16 South West conference winning a place in the National League play-offs.
Two players have been selected to represent the South West in European competitions and four of the squad have been invited to train with the England South West squad.
Several of the club members have taken coaching, referee and table official awards.

2. LOOE ROWING CLUB:
In June 2008 the club had two men's teams and only seven junior members. The club identified it needed to attract more young people and successfully applied for funding for four indoor rowing machines to offer a weekly club at Looe School and Liskeard/Looe Rugby club.
The club now has five U16 crews totalling 40 juniors who consistently excel in regattas. Club members attend school assemblies talking about the club and the tradition of gig rowing.
Three volunteers have qualified as Rowing Level 2 Coaches. The club recently achieved Sport England Clubmark accreditation.

3. TREVENSON FOOTBALL CLUB:
Trevenson have been proactive in all the categories of provision they operate. This FA Charter Standard club have increased participation within all their girls sections and introduced both Adult and Youth Disability sections.
As a consequence they now run two adult Disability teams plus youth U16s and U12s. They work hard to make all their provisions sustainable with effective coach recruitment and retention policies.

4. ST AUSTELL RUNNING CLUB:
Started in 2007 with 40 members, increasing to 200 members in 2009. Successfully applied for funding for 12 members to achieve Level 1 coaching qualification who are now progressing to Level 2.
The club has fund-raised for Mount Edgcumbe Hospice with 26 members running the London Marathon raising £1,500.
One member ran the New York Marathon and raised £3,000 for the Precious Lives Appeal.
The concept of the first Eden Project Marathon was designed by the club, set to be the largest race in Cornwall in October with 1,500 runners in the main event and 1,000 in the 1 mile fun run.

5. TRURO FENCING CLUB:
Membership of the club has doubled in the last two years, they cater for all levels of athlete. Truro currently boasts both the Men's and Women's Individual National Champions and the Men's Team Winners.
Athletes have been selected to fence for Great Britain at the World Championships along with one of the club's coaches.
The club has funded members to gain coaching qualifications. The club has an elite programme for eight Olympic standard fencers and four future Olympians.
They also run regular beginners' courses increasing adult membership.

6. CORNWALL ATHLETIC CLUB:
The club encourages all ages and backgrounds to participate with 190 adult members who represent track and field, cross country, triathlon, fell and road running competitions.
The club actively works to recruit new coaches and improve the qualifications of existing coaches.
Cornwall AC organises four local races including the historic Duchy Marathon which is in its 33rd year and Britain's second oldest marathon.
Club volunteers, officials and runners all join forces to organise events professionally and for the enjoyment of the local running community.
In the 2008 Grand Prix they had 16 runners winning from U20, U35, Vets and Open Male and Female.

7. HAYLE RUNNING CLUB:
The club has seven ability groups catering for a range of running needs from beginner to elite. It encourages runners to train as coaches with 18 currently qualified.
It has grown to more than 230 members and takes its responsibility to the community seriously, club members have raised a total of £30,000 for the Cornish Heart Unit.
The club coaches in St Ives School and has organised LEAP activities for Penwith District Council.
Club members facilitate and marshal at the Penzance Race for Life and regularly work with disabled and learning difficulty athletes.

8. PENZANCE HOCKEY CLUB:
Successfully applied for Awards for All grant of £9,579 to supply each primary school and Nancalverne Special School with a Hockey Starter Kit.
The club has also part funded a community coach to go into primary to deliver hockey. Junior membership in the club has increased to 90 junior members aged six to 16 years.
The club were county runners up in three competitions and county winners of the U13 National Mini Championships.
Sixteen members participate at Junior Development Centres and nine have progressed onto the Junior Academy Centres.
Two players have been selected to attend the Junior Regional Performance Centre at Exeter.
