Truro kids get to the roots of golf

Truro’s Lemon Quay will be unexpectedly transformed into a hive of golfing activity next week as a national campaign to promote the sport to young people comes to Cornwall.

Golf Roots, an exciting inner-city golf project targeted at youngsters and children from all backgrounds and abilities, will be holding a public event at Lemon Quay in Truro on Friday 10 July.

Truro is one of 16 cities across England to sign up for Golf Roots, signalling a flurry of golf activity for youngsters throughout the coming summer. As part of the project, children from nine primary schools in the Truro area have been introduced to the sport during free in-school activity sessions, run by coaches from the Cornwall Sports Partnership.

The public event next week will see children from the nine schools demonstrating their new-found golf skills in tri-golf. There will also be the opportunity for passers-by to have a go at swinging a virtual club on a Wii with the Sports Partnership coaches.

Golf professional Richard Saddler from Killiow Golf Club will be attending the event, giving tips and advice on improving game-play and will also have a number of prizes up for grabs.

Chris Hunkin, from the Cornwall Sports Partnership, is organising the project and says: “Tri-golf is a fun and enjoyable adaptation of the traditional game which gives children a wonderful introduction to golf. It’s been fantastic seeing the primary school children progress so much and the event on 10 July will be a celebration of their new talent!”
