Star athlete Matt wins national shot-putting championship

Last week a 16 year-old Cornish athlete shot to fame at the Aviva England Athletics National Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham, winning the under 17 shot-putting event.

Matt Halton, from Newquay & Par Athletics Club, competed at the prestigious athletics event and took the title of National Shot Champion for his age group. Moreover, he was not alone with his success; a number of his fellow Cornish athletes also set new county records in their own events.

Maria Brett, from Newquay & Par Athletics Club, set a new County record in the Under 15 60 metre hurdles; and Jordanna Morrish, from Cornwall Athletics Club, set a new record in the Under 15 high jump, finishing in fourth place.

And there was further success in the shot-putting as Karis Harrington, from Newquay & Par Athletics Club, set a new record for Cornwall in the Under 15 age group, finishing in fifth place.
