Sports Partnership launches free lunchtime exercise club

Livening up an 'average' day and injecting a bit of oomph into the working week, the Cornwall Sports Partnership has launched a free lunchtime exercise club.

Piloting the exciting new programme with Cornwall County Council, professionally qualified coaches from the Sports Partnership delivered the first of the free drop-in lunchtime exercise classes on Monday February 23 to employees from various council departments.

Keeping participants on their toes, the Partnership will deliver a number of different sports and the content of the class will change each week. During their first session, council staff were put through their paces with an Ultimate Frisbee class.

Rob Harrison, Coach Coordinator at the Sports Partnership, says: “Following a successful first session today, we’re hoping that more people will gradually join in. We understand that it’s not easy to simply drop work commitments so we’ve made the class timings as flexible as possible – giving participants the option to join and leave whenever they can over two hours. Plus, we’ve designed the exercise to be suitable for all fitness levels to make the sessions enjoyable for everyone.

“Piloting the sessions with the County Council now, we’re keen that once we have a good routine in place we’ll be able to increase the number of sessions each week and possibly deliver them in a variety of locations. So, watch this space!”

Social Care Framework Support Worker, Julie Buckley enthuses: “We all thoroughly enjoyed playing Frisbee today – it’s good being able to get active rather than just sit at your desk in your lunch hour. It was great fun and will hopefully burn off some unwanted calories, and we can’t wait for next week’s installment of the Lunchtime Sports Club!”

Aiming to help the Cornish population become fitter and healthier, the Cornwall Sports Partnership is looking to run free lunchtime classes for companies or collaborations of companies across the county very soon. If you’re keen on inspiring your workplace to become fit and active, the Primary Care Trust is currently investing in an ‘Active Workplaces Award’ which will be launched later in the year.  For further information, contact the Health Promotion Team on 01209 313419 / info@healthpromcornwall.org or visit: www.healthpromcornwall.org
