Sport Unlimited gets windsurfers afloat

A sports grant has made it possible to launch a windsurfing course for
young people for a very low cost at a popular local beach.

Largely funded by Sport England through a Sport Unlimited grant,
organised by Cornwall Sports Partnership, the 8 week course for
secondary school pupils runs at Polkerris Beach and costs just £40. By
running the term-time course over eight weeks, the objective is to
retain as many as possible by giving them time to get properly into the
sport.

A similar course in June saw 20 young people, mainly from Fowey Community
College, windsurfing regularly at the beach each week. Ashley Couchman,
15, who enjoyed that course and is now a keen windsurfer said: 'Thanks
to the tuition and the safe location at Polkerris Beach I've gained the
confidence and enthusiasm to develop my windsurfing and now try other
watersports, too.'

Centre manager, Bob Shillito said: 'This course is an ideal way to
introduce young people to windsurfing regularly' adding that '“grant
funding makes it possible for everyone to get involved'.
