Sky Sports all set to support Cornish Schools with Olympic visits

Sky Sports Living for Sport

Schools in Cornwall are being encouraged to sign up and get involved in Sky Sports Living for Sport, a free initiative that uses sport to inspire young people to be the best they can be. Supported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Sky Sports Living for Sport is a free online initiative providing schools with the chance to create flexible and tailored projects to inspire and motivate young people aged 11 - 16.

By signing up for Sky Sports Living for Sport schools can get a visit from an Olympian or Paralympian.  Last year, Joe Glanfield, an Olympic Sailor, was among those who visited schools in the South West.

Through the project, pupils take part in range of sporting activities to help achieve personal goals. As they develop their skills and confidence, they also get the chance to create a sports event themselves.

Sky Sports Living for Sport can be used by schools to address four key areas to support different groups of young people they might want to work with: Improving young people's health and well being, developing their self esteem and self worth, increasing attainment and achievement or helping to inspire them to reach their full potential.

Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell - now in his third year as the Sky Sports Living for Sport Ambassador - has helped teachers across the UK by visiting schools to inspire and motivate pupils.

Simon White, PE Teacher at Wadham Community School, Crewkerne, Somerset comments: "This project has helped our pupils in so many ways. Sport not only brings pupils together through teamwork, but it also keeps them engaged and enhances their performances in the classroom. It also gives them a drive and an incentive to achieve something that they may not have thought previously possible."

Darren Campbell adds: "It's great to visit the schools and see young people get involved with Sky Sports Living for Sport, giving them the encouragement to be the best they can be.

"My role as Ambassador means I am able to use my own life story and the influence sport had on all aspects of my life and to show them how anything is possible."
