Nominate your coach for a 2010 cornwall sports award!
The Cornwall Sports Partnership is now inviting nominations for the 2010 Cornwall Sports Awards which will be staged at the Esplanade Hotel in Newquay on Friday November 12.
New to the Awards this year is an enhanced Coaching category, which has been adapted to come in line with the UK coaching awards, organised by Sports Coach UK. The winners of each Cornwall Coaching Award will be put forward to the national event to be held on 30 November in London.
The new and improved Coaching category will include the following awards: ‘Children’s Coach of the Year’, ‘Participation Coach of the Year’, ‘Young Coach of the Year – Under 25’, and ‘Performance & Development Coach of the Year’. Further details of each award can be found at www.cornwallsportspartnership.co.uk
The winners of last year’s Coaching Awards include:
Female Coach: Mo Pearson, Cornwall Athletics Club
A Level 4 athletics coach, Mo has a natural affinity with young people and has a talent to encourage and make athletics enjoyable to all. She has also developed two athletes to compete in national championships.
Male Coach: Andrew Reeve, St Leonards Equestrian Centre
Andrew has coached two Olympic medallists, winning a silver medal in Beijing & European silver medals in 2007 and 2009. He established training camps for boys with little or no riding experience; three of these boys represented Great Britain in Modern Pentathlon.
Young Coach of the Year U25: James Cockley – age 23 Fowey Gig Rowing Club
Despite his young age, he showed great maturity whilst dealing with a wide range of people from 16-60 years old. Described as having a calm yet authoritive manner, he has taken control of a section of Fowey gig Rowing Club that was dwindling away. Last year the ladies rowing crew had their best ever season thanks to James’s coaching.
The Cornwall Sports Awards were staged for the first time in 2006 by the Sports Partnership and are designed to recognise and honour the contributions made by dedicated sports coaches, officials, clubs, volunteers and young leaders from across the county.
There are four categories, incorporating 13 separate Awards; Coaching, Club, Volunteering, and Sport Unlimited.
Once again the ceremony has been designed to build on the success of last year’s event. Natasha Howard, Club Development Officer at the Cornwall Sports Partnership, explains: “The Cornwall Sports Awards is a wonderful chance for anyone involved in sport across the county to honour the successes of their clubs, coaches and volunteers.
“Anyone can make a nomination, with no limit to the number of nominations that can be made by an organisation or an individual. The only rule is that clubs or individuals being nominated must be based in Cornwall”.
Nomination forms for this year’s Awards are available from www.thisiscornwall.co.uk and www.cornwallsportspartnership.co.uk or by contacting Natasha Howard on nhoward@cornwall.gov.uk or 01872 323347.
The closing date for nominations is August 31 – so, get your form in quick to ensure that your sports club, volunteer, coach or official receives the recognition they deserve!
