Nigerian Inspiration

Nigerian Inspiration

An international delegation from Nigeria recently visited Mounts Bay School & Penwith SSP for four days, as part of the Youth Sport Trust's ‘International Inspiration’ programme which is linked to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The delegation included several people working at Government (Federal) level in Nigeria who write and influence national strategies, and the Nigeria Olympic Committee President.

They were welcomed to Mounts Bay School by special assemblies, including Taiko drumming and cheerleading.

The main outcome of the visit was to highlight how the national PESSYP strategy is being delivered through a sports college and a school sports partnership, and to show how collaborative work with other agencies is the key to success on the ground.

The delegation had several national presentations whilst they were in London and in Cornwall they receieved a presentation from the Cornwall Sports Partnership Strategic Director, Mike Thomas. There were also presentations from Gemma Wilson, the Senior Competition Manager for Cornwall; Jon Coleman the Partnership Development Manager for Penwith SSP; James Davidson, Director of Sport at Mounts Bay; and several presentations from Sara Davey, the Headteacher at Mounts Bay School.

Whilst visiting Mounts Bay School, they also had the opportunity to see high quality after school provision and high quality PE and Outdoor Education lessons.

Other visits included Pensans Primary School, to highlight the impact that a Primary Link Teacher is having on Physical Education; Nancealverne Special School highlighted inclusion and PE practices for children with disabilities; and Cape Cornwall School to see high quality competition in action. Also, a visit to Truro College highlighted teacher training opportunities and participation levels in sports for 16–19 year olds.

Feedback from the British Council, Unicef and the Youth Sport Trust highlighted that all of the outcomes were met during their visit to Cornwall.
