New Healthy Weight Strategy for Cornwall & IOS is launched
More people should be on the path to a healthy weight thanks to plans set out in the new Healthy Weight Strategy for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Helping people to achieve and maintain a healthy weight is one of the most important and challenging targets facing local agencies. Currently, the proportion of children and adults who are not a healthy weight is growing.
The strategy brings together the efforts of a wide range of agencies including the local NHS, Cornwall Council, Cornwall Sports Partnership and the voluntary and community sector.
The strategy recognises that a healthy weight is about much more than an individual’s weight or body shape. It can so often be an essential foundation for physical, emotional and social wellbeing. Like a good education or living in a strong community it can help an individual to reach their full potential in many aspects of life.
Lowering the risk of illness like heart disease, diabetes or stroke, protecting and enjoying our natural environment and developing a new generation of more mobile, confident children and families are just some of the potential benefits of striking a healthy balance between the food we eat and the activity we undertake.
The vision given in the strategy is:
To achieve an upward trend in the number of people who are a healthy weight in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by 2013, with a particular focus on children and families
By building on the real commitment to change among colleagues in the public and community sectors the strategy should create more happy, healthy people.
