Netball development in Ethiopia is off the mark
Following a recent visit to Assossa, Ethiopia, Denise May of Budehaven Community School recently told Netball South West of her experiences and how she is involved in boosting opportunities for women to participate in Netball.
"In February, the Budehaven Community School staff and students delegation saw an amazing boost to opportunities in new sports for the young people in the town. These included Tag rugby, ultimate Frisbee, rounders, football and skipping. However, the sport which seems to have captured their hearts is netball and the developments so far have been incredible. I provided the PE teacher with a speedy inset on the game and provided him with basic rules, high five books, netballs and bibs and low and behold the game of netball was introduced to the town of Assossa
The PE teacher, Mulatu, has now taken up a post as coach for the Zone Sporting Federation for Assossa and has taken on the mantle to fulfil his dream of providing sport for the girls and spreading the game of netball. Thanks to the generosity of Jean Davies, St Austell Netball Club and to Heather Crouch, Liz Bloor and Rebecca Ward of South West Netball, I was able to provide additional resources, in the form of netballs, playing kit, bibs and DVD's, which has enabled Mulatu to start to spread the game further.
In his words, he would like to "See netball played at a higher level in the Country" and I feel so proud that his energy and enthusiasm has been matched by the girls who have taken up the sport. His ambitious drive might hopefully lead to a National team in Ethiopia one day - so watch this space!!"
