Local companies celebrate sporting success at the first Cornwall Corporate Games
Teams of budding sports players from various businesses around the county, including Cornwall County Council staff, are celebrating their success at the first ever Cornwall Corporate Games held in Newquay over the weekend 19 – 21 September 2008.
The Corporate Games, which Cornwall Sports Partnership organised, are designed to build confidence, loyalty and team spirit as well as promote health and fitness, and featured teams of competitors from every size and kind of Cornish organisation.
The Council’s 39 strong team competed in 6 sports at the biggest multisport participation event in Cornwall. Their overall success resulted in them being presented with the Medallist Award for topping the medals table after individuals and teams battled their way to success in tennis, soccer 6’s, running, netball, golf and badminton.
The team also received the Sport for Life Grand Award which recognises leadership in fitness, team building and company excellence.
In addition to the individual medals, the council was also awarded the Sports Championships Awards for the Soccer 6’s, tennis and running and the Championship Division Award for their category.
Hosted by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, the Games will help to put Cornwall on the map as a dynamic centre for sport, business and tourism
Originating in San Francisco in 1988, the Corporate Games is a much travelled event. Games have been held in such diverse places as Budapest, Johannesburg, Geneva and The Hague.
Commenting on the success of the Cornwall County Council team, Soccer 6’s Team Captain Glenn Caplin says: "we had a great time playing in the Cornwall Corporate Games and all really bonded as a team. Many of us have enjoyed ourselves so much that we are planning on their joining local teams."
