Golf Roots Project tees off in Truro

Kea and Devoran Primary School children tee off with the Golf Roots Project

Shoppers passing by Truro’s Lemon Quay unexpectedly stumbled across a busy golf course last Friday as a national campaign to promote the sport to young people came to Cornwall.

Golf Roots, an exciting inner-city golf project targeted at youngsters and children from all backgrounds and abilities, working together with the Cornwall Sports Partnership, held a public event for school children in the centre of Truro on Friday 10 July.

The event saw children from nine schools in the Truro area demonstrating new-found golf skills in tri-golf, having been recently introduced to the sport during free in-school activity sessions, run by coaches from the Cornwall Sports Partnership.

Golf professional Richard Saddler from Killiow Golf Club and assistant professional Lee Mitchell from Truro golf club also attended the event, giving tips and advice to both the school children and Truro shoppers.

Truro is one of 16 cities across England to sign up for the Golf Roots Project, signalling a flurry of golf activity for youngsters throughout the coming summer. As part of the project, children from St Mary’s, St Erme with Trispen, Kea, Devoran, Chacewater, Blackwater, Mount Hawke, Mithian and Perranporth primary schools received special tri-golf tuition and have also been signposted to their local clubs to continue playing the sport.

Chris Hunkin, from the Cornwall Sports Partnership, has been organising the project and says: “It’s been fantastic seeing the primary school children progress so much over the past few weeks and, as well as being great fun, this event has been the perfect opportunity for them to show off their new talent!”
