The national Director for Children & Young People at Sport England found himself all at sea last week during a visit to Cornwall to see what efforts are being made to get our young population more active.

Sport England’s Mike Diaper joined the Cornwall Sports Partnership on Wednesday May 5 for a close look at all the hard work being put in to get more Cornish young people doing more sport. During his visit he was able to get out on the water and have his first go at gig rowing; following an introduction by ‘Explore Rowing’ - a youth rowing project - at Mylor Yacht Harbour.

‘Explore Rowing’ has been successfully set up as part of ‘Sport Unlimited’, a national Sport England initiative specifically for semi-sporty young people to try something they ordinarily wouldn’t have either the chance or confidence to do. With funding from Sport England, the rowing group is jointly organised by Truro & Penwith College, in collaboration with Truro River Rowing Club and the Cornwall Sports Partnership.

Mike Diaper, Director for Children & Young People at Sport England , enthuses: "It was fantastic to see Sport Unlimited in action; from traditional sports to more adventurous pursuits - like Gig Rowing, which I saw first hand. The Cornwall Sports Partnership is doing a great job in using the scheme to get more and more young people into sport in their communities."

There are currently over 70 Sport Unlimited projects running across Cornwall, offering taster sessions in a variety of different sports; from swimming and golf, to rock climbing and paddlesurfing. For further details, please visit: www.cornwallsportspartnership.co.uk/sportunlimited
