Cornwall Sports Partnership stages special event to mark Paralympic handover day

Young people with a disability from schools and colleges across Cornwall will be heading for Newquay Sports Centre on Wednesday, September 17th to take part in a very special Paralympic Handover ceremony.

The event, which has been organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership, will begin at 1.30 pm with the youngsters taking part in a range of Paralympic Sports, including Judo, Basketball and Trampolining.

At 3pm the Cornish group will ‘join’ the official Handover ceremony via a giant screen in the Centre’s Sports Hall to watch as the Paralympic Torch is handed over to the Mayor of London Boris Johnson to mark the official start of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Cornwall has a number of Olympic athletes currently attending the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing.  These include David Weatherill ( Table Tennis); Mick Beard ( Archery) and Jonathan Fox and Matt Whorwood
( Swimming).

“Cornwall has a very proud history in producing successful Paralympic athletes and we are keen to encourage young people in schools and colleges to consider taking part in London 2012” said Disability Officer Steve Hillman.

“Cornwall Sports Partnership is setting up a multi sport club to support disabled children and adults and we are looking for young people with disabilities to join us“.
