Chance to Shine Beach Cricket Festival
To celebrate National Cricket Day, 23 June, the Cornwall Cricket Board, working in conjunction with the Cornwall Sports Partnership and Chance to Shine, hosted a Year 7 Beach Cricket Festival at Perranporth - between the incoming tides.
The day proved a huge success with beautiful weather and a good number of schools participating, including: Newquay Tretherras and Newquay Treviglas, Cape Cornwall, Brannel, Falmouth and The Roseland.
The games followed the kwik cricket rules and were six a-side, played on the sand with boundaries for the children to hit their 4s and 6s. Each game was fast and high-scoring, creating a lot of fun and excitement. The Teachers were actively involved in scoring and umpiring, and they too enjoyed their day at the beach.
Offering a very welcome helping hand at the event was Rosalie Burch, England Women’s Cricketer and Chance to Shine Ambassador, who travelled down from Buckinghamshire to participate during the day.
The day was also supported by children from Falmouth who are involved in the Princess Trust Scheme; they helped throughout the day completing tasks for their own project such as interviews with officials and players. They also produced a large number of cream teas that were much appreciated by all players and officials.
Joe Skinner, Cornwall Cricket Development Manager, says: “A special word of thanks must go to Adrian Noott, who manages the Falmouth Chance to Shine programme, for coming up with the idea; Stuart Priscott, the South West Regional Manager for Chance to Shine, for making it one of five National headline events; and Tim Marrion from the Cornwall Sports Partnership for helping on the Day.
Following the event, schools openly expressed a desire to repeat the event on an annual basis which is great news, so watch this space!”
Chance to Shine is a Schools cricket coaching programme aiming to educate children through cricket. This programme is delivered in the schools through the community cricket club structure.
