£750,000 for Youth Sports Projects in Cornwall

Cornwall Sports Partnership (CSP) has secured three quarters of a million pounds for district led partnerships to run sports projects for children aged 11-16.

The money is now available for distribution across the county via proposals to the CSP from District led partnerships. This follows the successful Healthy Active Lifestyles Project (HALP) which delivered successful Beach and Street Games across the county between 2003 and 2006, resulting in a reported 18% increase in extra-curricular physical activity among 11-16 year olds.

Proposals are judged according to their ability to positively influence participation especially among hard to reach groups within these age ranges and to impact on social agenda such as: obesity, health, crime reduction, social integration and cohesion by removing many of the barriers to activity such as cost and opportunity.

To date 4 proposals have been put forward and accepted including bids from Penwith – ‘streetgames’ and holiday activities, Kerrier – extreme/lifestyle sports and street/beach games, Restormel – midnight soccer leagues & street games and Caradon - dance projects, mountain biking, soccer coaching and multi sports.

If you want to know what is happening in your area or are keen for further information and advice on proposals and the development of District led HALP community partnerships contact your District Leisure Officer.

Editors note.

The Cornwall Sports Partnership is the strategic body for sport and its co-ordination in the county, and is core funded by Sport England. Our main target is to achieve a one percent increase in particpation in sport and physical activity year on year. The CSP is hosted by Cornwall County Council and incorporates a wide range of partners including District Authorities, Health, Police, National Governing Bodies of Sport, and Education.

The Healthy Active Lifestyle Project (HALP) was part of Cornwall County Councils L PSA target 11. The successful satisfaction of its three criteria, which included achieving an increase in the extracurricular physical activity participation rate among 11-16 year olds via informal, localised and non competitive provision of street and beach games, resulted in the release of these reward monies.
