2010 Inspectors visit Cornwall

BRITAIN'S BID FOR THE WORLD LIFESAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2010

INTERNATIONAL INSPECTORS VISIT CORNWALL

The second step in Britain's bid to host the World Lifesaving Championships in 2010 was made at the end of July when the two inspectors from the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) visited Newquay to interrogate the bid and assess the facilities.

They inspected Fistral Beach, the proposed site for the Championships and for the temporary Olympic pool, visited the Eden Project, the location for the opening ceremony, and witnessed the National Nipper Championships, the junior branch of surf life savers (7- 13 yrs old).

Dr HaraldVervaecke, Secretary General of ILS, said "The British Bid was very well presented by a very strong team. There are certain challenges remaining which relate to the expensive accommodation in the area and the question of an Olympic-sized pool, but we are very impressed by the very close collaboration between the SLSGB (Surf Life Saving Great Britain) and the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) which is also supporting the bid".

Dr Vervaecke and MrJelleMeintsma, the ILS commissioner for sport, were particularly pleased to see the joy and enthusiasm of the Nippers who are "the ones aiming at becoming the heroes of tomorrow".

The awarding of host nation status will be made in Oporto, Portugal at the end of September when Britain will present its final case in competition with other nations as yet undisclosed.
