Sports leadership & volunteering within the community

In October 2002 Cornwall Sports Partnership (previously Active Sport) seconded a Sports Development Officer from Carrick Leisure to develop leadership across Cornwall within educational establishments. Within two years this work had successfully implemented sports leadership awards in every secondary school and Further Education colleges.

More recently, 2005 onwards, we have supported the work within education, but have been focusing on countywide developments, working in particular with external agencies, including: the Cornwall Youth Service and Voluntary Youth organisations; the police, Playing for Success Learning Zones (inc. Cornish Pirates Learning Zone); and Local Authority Leisure Services and Sports Development units.

This led to two specific groups being established to drive leadership forward; an Education Group and a Community Steering Group, both of which support and coordinate leadership developments across Cornwall.

The Community Delivery Model for leadership emphasises that funds are to be used to set up courses, train new tutors and purchase resources, and the match funding through the CSP supports a Leadership Coordinator for one day a week.
