Cornwall Celebrates – Volunteering
18 November 2010
"Thank you for having a look at the ‘Cornwall Celebrates - Volunteering’ Awards 2010.
Last year was the first time we held these awards but the success of the 2009 event has encouraged us to leave the format broadly unaltered with the exception of the introduction of a new category for the ‘Host of the Year’.
This year’s General Election campaign highlighted the increasing importance attached to getting people active and involved within their communities and these awards really reflect the way in which Cornwall is at the forefront of this.
With a volunteering rate of 32.2%, we are the best performing of equivalent local authority areas in the country – something that truly deserves celebration.
But in order to stay that way, it is important that we don’t take our volunteers for granted. By making a nomination, you can help say thank you to one of Cornwall’s greatest assets - its volunteers."
Yours,
Ian Jones

Questions & Answers
Do I need to tell the person I am nominating them?
We have found that it is important to tell the individual that you are nominating them to avoid embarrassment or confusion and in any event, if they are short-listed we will have to contact them to invite them to the event and ask them permission to use their name in the publicity.
What Happens to my nomination once I send it off?
All nominations go through a judging panel made up of ‘experts’ in that particular category. All are carefully considered and everyone nominated will receive a ‘Cornwall Celebrates – Volunteering’ certificate.
What if the person I nominate is short-listed?
All of those short-listed will be invited to attend the Award Ceremony on 18th November 2010 where the winners will be announced. Everyone short-listed will receive a ‘Cornwall Celebrates – Volunteering’ commemorative scroll.
How are the winners chosen?
A special panel, chaired by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Lady Mary Holborow, will consider each of the short-listed cases and choose the winner for each category. There will also be an overall winner of winners. All winners will receive a prize.
Who can be nominated?
Any volunteer, of any age, who lives or volunteers in Cornwall is eligible. They do not need to be registered with a Volunteer Centre and it does not matter who they volunteer for or how many or few hours they give.
Simply complete the form enclosed and decide which category best reflects their volunteering. We have included some case studies to help you identify what the judges might be looking for.
Who is responsible for ‘Cornwall Celebrates – Volunteering’?
The event is planned and run by Volunteer Cornwall with sponsorship by a range of partners.
What if I want more information?
In the event of any queries or questions, please write to Volunteer Cornwall, Heron House, Newham Road, Truro, TR1 2DP but please note, we cannot enter into correspondence about individual cases and the judges decisions are final.
The Categories
There are 13 categories in which a volunteer can be nominated. Please look through the list and choose the most appropriate. Volunteers cannot be entered under multiple categories for the same volunteering. If in doubt, contact us for advice.
This year, we have introduced an award for the ‘Host of the Year’ which recognises organisations which excel in their attitudes and approach towards volunteers. Please use the standard nomination form and substitute ‘person’ for ‘host’ to nominate the group you think deserves recognition for the way it supports its volunteers.
